Standard form writes huge or tiny numbers neatly: A × 10ⁿ, with 1 ≤ A < 10.

Digits move one place left (×) or right (÷) for each zero.

Standard form

3,400 = 3.4 × 10³. 0.005 = 5 × 10⁻³.

Decimal × decimal

0.3 × 0.2: do 3 × 2 = 6, count 2 decimal places → 0.06.

Worked example

Write 52,000 in standard form
