Equations & Inequalities

Keep the balance: whatever you do to one side, do to the other.

📖 Learn

Both sides

5x + 2 = 3x + 10 → take 3x from both sides → 2x + 2 = 10 → x = 4.

Inequalities

Solve like equations. 3x > 12 means x > 4. Multiply/divide by a negative? Flip the sign!

Simultaneous

Two equations, two unknowns. Add or subtract them to eliminate one letter.

Worked example

Solve 4x − 3 = x + 9

  1. 1Subtract x: 3x − 3 = 9
  2. 2Add 3: 3x = 12
  3. 3Divide by 3: x = 4 ✅
